of the Holy Family
Daniel L. Rael was born and raised in the Taos Valley.  His love of the mountains of Northern New Mexico led to a Bachelors of Science degree from Colorado State University.  He is currently a Resource Staff Officer with the Carson National Forest.

Daniel married Pat Barela, grand-daughter of the famous Taos Woodcarver Patrocinio Barela and was brought into the world of the Santero.

Artists Statement
As I studied the smallest parts of grasses, trees, and flowers, I realized what a tremendous artist God is,  to create such beauty in nature.   I feel an artistic
drive to express my scientific and artistic talent, in his name.

I began carving cedar in 1993.  I enjoy the physical effort of carving with knives, chisels, and mallet.  The cedar I carve is a beautiful wood, aromatic, with rich crimson and white colors, shaped by wind, water, and the passage of time.  Spiritually, to me carvings are prayers, and the cedar keeps me connected to heaven and earth.
