Being clinically depressed is very different from the down type of feeling that all people experience from time to time.
Occasional feelings of sadness are a normal part of life, and it is unfortunate that such feelings are often colloquially
referred to as "depression." In clinical depression, such feelings are out of proportion to any external causes. There are
things in everyone's life that are possible causes of sadness, but people who are not depressed manage to cope with
these things without becoming incapacitated.
In recent years, recovery from the depression that has gripped me has become a central focus of my
life. For decades I lived without knowing that I was hiding from a silent enemy that would one day take control of me. Since being diagnosed as a depressive, I have devoted much attention to reading about this illness. Because what I have learned may be helpful to others, I want to share it with you here. I hope that this information will help lead you to greater awareness of this disease and its treatment, and that this knowledge will bring you peace.

Welcome to Dealing with Depression, an educational site created to dispel
some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding depression. We invite you
to find out more about depression: who it affects and why, how to recognize
the symptoms, and how to seek help for yourself or a loved one.
This web page is about clinical depression. It addresses not the "down" mood
which we all get from time to time and which leads us to say, "I'm depressed," but
the often debilitating illness which affects one in five people, children as well as
adults. Clinical depression has many different facets, and affects not only
someone's mood, but often also their ability to function normally. Many depressed
people experience impaired memory, difficulty concentrating, and confused
thought processes. Some people experience what seems like unbearable noise or
pain in their head which is purely mental (not the product of a headache, etc.). It
can become impossible to speak or smile normally. Obviously, depression is much
more complicated than a passing mood.
