War Experiences

(Memorial Page)

I was born in London, England on 3.10.1915, youngest son of a London Metropolitan Police Constable. My sister and brother are still in the land of the living aged 84 and 83 respectively.

I won a scholarship to Leyton County High School, and after Matriculation, went to work in a Lithographic printers, Waterlow and Sons, training to be an estimating clerk, where I met Charlotte who worked in the same office, and whom I married in 1941.

I refused to register for military service in 1939 and spent the war years, briefly doing land work, and then as a demolition labourer during the Blitz, and as a Rescue worker in Islington, then in the Civil Defence Mobile Reserve in S.E. England, and Eastbourne Rescue Service, and finally back to Islington for the Doodlebugs and V.2's.

I went back to the Building trade after the War, firstly as a general labourer, then as a Cost Clerk and finally as Company Secretary.

In 1957 my wife and I started business on our own as Insurance Brokers. I passed my A.C.I.I. examinations, and eventually became a Fellow of the British Insurance Brokers Association My wife and I sold or business and retired in 1992.

We have two children, Tony was born in 1945 and went to Cambridge University and is by way of becoming well known as a Classical Orchestra conductor, and solo clarinettist. He has two sons, Sam Pythagoras,(16) and Mungo Louis (13). Susan was born in 1951 went to Oxford University, and has two children, Lawrence (6) and Alessia (3)

A few other points which may be of interest: Like Glen and Langston, I was taught to be cautious and I send them fraternal greetings. Both Charlotte and I are Vegan,(1976) teetotal,(1969) and Nonsmokers(1956) and we both did Werner Erhart's EST training in 1979.

Charlotte, on hindsight, showed signs of memory loss, just before we retired, but it got worse until last year when she ceased to know me or her children and grandchildren and she is at present in a residential home suffering from Alzheimers. I am able to visit her each day but she does not know who I am and declares that she has never been married. It is very sad. On 6th January, 1998, Charlotte's died by a Heart attack.

That's the lot. I hope I havn't bored you.

"Who I am?   I am the possibility of being forever young, living to a hundred years or more, and making a difference.    And that is who I am. " - Arthur

Arthur

When you came to us,
You were not seeking the wise or the wealthy,
But only asking for our friendship.

In your eyes I saw a twinkle
Kindly smiling my name when, once, when you called,
All I treasured of our friendship, I leave on the sand,
Now that you are gone, to find other seas.

We came to know what your boat carried,
Neither anger nor weapons for fighting,
but nets for fishing, catching us in your daily labor.

The world will always need you, Arthur,
Your hands for service, your heart for loving,
and your arms for lifting the poor and broken.

May your family know where you have been,
In our villages and in the heart of our cities,
and I will remember you, Arthur, when you were with me.
