Carol's Own .. Pike's Peak and Garden of the Gods
Tour Colorado Springs:
Garden of the Gods Pikes Peak .. Cam (t) I was born in Valhalla (honest -- it's a section of Bronxville, NY) but was taken away from there at the age of 6 weeks and lived in 18 other homes in 10 other towns before finally settling here in Colorado Springs, which struck me as paradise when I first arrived, at age 12.
"Here" is, specifically, a genuine adobe house that my step-father, an artist, started building in 1938 and finished about 10 years later. It is a piece of sculpture in itself, and is filled with his beautiful paintings, sculptures, and ceramic works. It's on a dirt road on a hillside that used to be way beyond the edge of town but is now in the geographic center of this vastly overgrown city. Several of our neighbors have horses; deer and other critters wander through our yards, and we sometimes hear coyotes "singing" at night.
I've been married and divorced twice and now share life with the man I should always have been with -- oh, if only we had realized that back in high school, when we were dear friends who never dated each other! I have a wonderful son, Tim, a free-lance computer programmer who is married to a delightful Quebecoise librarian named Suzanne, and a wonderful daughter, Libby, who turned away from a potential career as a biologist to become a first grade teacher. No grandchildren yet -- I practice for them by doting on my sister's during their annual visits here.
Over the years I worked at a crazy variety of jobs, none of which were at all related to my college major, which was architecture. (I applied that education to remodeling and designing additions to several of the houses I lived in, and to designing sets for amateur theatre and dance productions.) Mostly, I earned my living writing and editing: everything from data sheets and technical manuals for oceanographic research instruments to newsletters and grant proposals for a nonprofit agency that provides supports and services for adults with developmental disabilities.
For fun in my "previous lives" I wrote a book (published as "Fitting In As a New Service Wife"); sang, danced, acted and directed in amateur theatre; served in town government and in neighborhood and precinct associations; did publicity for and hosted at folk music concerts; worked the finish line for marathons and road races; and participated in many political campaigns (I'm a yellow dog Democrat). Now I just garden (flowers and vegetables), read, do crossword puzzles, sew, listen to classical music (which I sometimes play on the piano, badly) and folk music (which I sometimes sing, not too badly), enjoy the activities of our high school alumni association, sometimes go camping in our beautiful mountains (I don't hike, I stroll), and try to keep up with the thoughts and doings of this wonderful group of friends, The Elders.
