Magdalena was born somewhere at around the start of World war II, she arrived with several hundred other Polish children into Teheran railway station out of Soviet Russia in a half starved state.

Some of the kids were claimed by their parents, some went into orphanages, Magdalena was lucky and she was adopted by the then Polish Consul General and his wife.

She remembers nothing of her past. She was educated in Persia, Palestine and then England.

We met in London, married at the Brompton Oratory in 1960 and have lived happily ever after. We have a son and a daughter and 6 grandchildren who are gorgeous, especially as you can give them back when you've had enough!

I was born in Warsaw, lived there through the war during which time my father was executed by the Germans and my mother sent to Aushwitz and then Ravensbruck concentration camps. She survived and came for me and fetched me out of "communist" Poland in 1945.

After a year in Germany we came to England where I went to school in Bolton and university at Newcastle on Tyne. I had to catch up on a lot of school work as thre was no school for Poles during the war, so I still discover gaps in my education. I qualified in dentistry, after a couple of years in London we moved to Coventry where I set up my own practice.

We now live in Kenilwiorth, made famous by Sir Walter Scott;s book of same name, just round the corner from Kenilworth Castle. Last year I took early retirement which means I have less time now than ever..

I am heavily involved in all sorts of things, but mainly I am chairman of the Federation of Poles in Great Britain. That is a full time unpaid job, I need to go to London to our offices at least twice a week.We are handily situated in King Street near Ravenscourt underground station. The building also houses 2 Polish restaurants, a museum, theater library, art gallery and other Polish offices.Any one coming to London, please visit me, an early e-mail will ensure my presence.

You can find out more about the federation and what we do on our home pages at: http://www.zem.co.uk/polinuk/fed/
