Born in 1952 in Hong Kong, John Lone
celebrates his birthday on October 13. He trained at Hong Kong's
Chin Chiu Academy and, at about the age of 10, began studying Beijing Opera.
He was given the name "Johnny" at the opera school in Hong Kong and later
assumed the English surname "Lone" to reflect his being an orphan with
no family name. He continued his acting and musical studies
at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, CA. Working
with famed playwright David Henry Hwang, in 1980 he starred in and choreographed
Hwang's first play, FOB, which won both Hwang and Lone Obie Awards.
He has worked continuously in stage, television and film, and was nominated
for a Golden Globe as Best Actor for Bernardo Bertolucci's film, The
Last Emperor in which he played the role of Emperor Henry Pu Yi.
While continuing to act in such
films as M. Butterfly, The Moderns and The Shadow, John Lone
has also become a recording artist. In 1997 he recorded a cd featuring
both English and Mandarin songs. As a choreographer, director, singer,
dancer and actor, he has earned accolades and awards and continues to offer
meaningful and inspired performances.
