Anecdotes about this Wonderful Game!
A fast and furious croquet player was Harpo Marx. In one
memorable match with Alexander Woolcott Harpo needed
only to hit Woolcott's ball to win the match.
However, there was a maple tree between the balls, so
(reportedly) Harpo either cut a tire in half or dug a trench
round the tree, shot and hit the ball, winning the game.
Another story about Harpo is that he convinced a neighbor
to put a court on the top of his garage. $50,000
later Harpo had his court! And these were
in Depression Days!
As I explain to my friends when they query me as
to some of the stories I tell, I don't need to make
this stuff up - that truth is far stranger than any fiction!
If you are visiting northern New Mexico and wish to play,
we are always willing to get in another game!
