Treasure Trove of Science
Eric W. Weisstein, research scientist in the Astronomy Department at the
University of Virginia, has compiled detailed online glossaries in eight
topics, as well as a scientific book bibliography. Topics include math,
physics, astronomy, and chemistry. Development of the glossaries varies
widely, from the over 14,000 entries for the centerpiece math glossary to
the 68 entries for rocket history. In addition to his explanation of the
topic, Weisstein offers hyperlinks to other entries and/or other sites.
Many entries are accompanied by the sources they were derived from. There
is a staggering amount of useful information here, and the whole site is a
tribute to the productive energy of the author. [JS]>

Women in Phusics
"There are more female physicists than people know about!" This claim is
made by the producers of this well-documented archive of citation and
biographical information about 20th century women physicists, led by UCLA
Physics Professor Emeritus, Nina Byers. This archive contains information
about more than 50 women in the past century (to 1976) who have made
original and important contributions to physics. The archive was compiled
by UCLA staff and others "active in fields in which contributions have been
made." Details about important contributions, publications, honors,
employment history, and references are provided for each woman included in
the database. Visitors can search the archive by name or by specific
physics fields. A database of the print references used to compile
information about the women cited is also available.
Whale Watching
This metasite, by Rauno Lauhakangas of the University of Helsinki, Finland,
includes a myriad of whale-related topics, some of which are scientific.
The research-oriented sections include: Oceanographic Research (a
collection of links to research sites, i.e. The Radio Acoustic Positioning
and Telemetry Network -- a useful technique for monitoring whale/fish
behavior); Cetacean's Rights (a section providing examples of legislation
regulating whale-watching in Argentina, New Zealand, and elsewhere); and
Bioacoustics (a section of links dedicated to Cetacean Research
Technology). Educators will find useful information and compelling
photographic images in the Cetacean Encyclopaedia (an introduction to whale
species); Cetacean Pictures; and Virtual Whale Watching (a high-tech,
state-of-the-art introduction to virtual whale-watching).
