The WIPP Site
The government plans to open the WIPP site later this month (SOON) which will allow them to bury so-called transuranic wastes half a mile below the surface of the earth in salt caverns. The plan is so designed that they believe the wastes, which have a half-life of 250,000 years will be safe for 10,000 years. Half of these wastes wil be transported from Hanford, Washington, with the rest coming from other plutonium producing laboratories throughout the country: Los Alamos, Chicago, Oak Ridge, Lawrence Livermore.
